When I read the “Hope” poem, I can’t help but shedding a few tears. The word “Hope” has been the theme for our family over the past 3 years. I’ve always tried to tell everyone of my family members and friends, “No matter how difficult or dark of a situation we face, with hope, something good will always prevail.”

I believe this so much that I had “Hope” tattooed on my wrist. Now, anytime I’m feeling sad or lonely, I can look at that and remember that Randy isn’t in pain anymore, and eventually we will all be O.K. (I also had a Melanoma ribbon [with a tiny red heart] tattooed on my left shoulder. I’m not a tattoo person, but I feel that I still have Randy with me when I look at the two I have.)

  2. I first discovered your site last year after seeing your story on NBC4 News. I emailed both you and George Wolfe about my husband’s story. He lost his battle with Ocular Melanoma on Feb. 10, 2009. I miss him terribly! There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t cry for him. I know he would want me to do what I can to help find a cure for this ugly disease. I’m hoping to be able to come to the bowling event tomorrow evening. I really think that would do me a ton of good. If I am unable to make it tomorrow, I hope there will be other events this summer that I can help with. I definitely want to try to come to the Black Ribbon Benefit in September. (We were going to come last year, but Randy wasn’t feeling well.)

Thank you so much for this site and for the courage you’ve shown throughout your battle!

Your story is so inspiriring! I am 35 and have recently been diagnosed with stage III melanoma as well! I have two children that I am raising on my own. Like you, death is not an option!!! We are fighters Katie! I am a Taurean and we are bulls,so, this is not going to get me down!! Stay positive and keep making a difference!

  4. I was recently diagnosed with a stage 1 melanoma. The plastic surgeon thought it was nothing, but removed it anyway. Then he did a wide excision, then found more cancer. At this point, I have another surgery and do not know what my staging will be. I am just stunned at how many educated people say to be, “oh, whew, it is only skin cancer. That is no big deal!” Public ignoraqnce in this matter is killing people.
